Wealthy Affiliate Review – 3 Months Later

by Declan on March 15, 2007

I promised I would write a bit more about my experiences with the Wealthy Affiliate paid forum.

After spending quite a while researching affiliate marketing I have gotten used to the sales pages and the phoney reviews that go hand in hand with promoting these kinds of products. There are hundreds of pages describing any of these products and I’m not sure if any of them can be trusted. Especially when the prices can reach into the thousands of dollars! I’m sure there’s a case to be made for spending a huge amount of money for something if it is a worthwhile investment but that’s the kind of money I simply don’t have.

Every other day some “guru” marketer releases a new ebook with the “latest technique” to make millions. Most of these marketers are only successful at selling their own product and building the kind of frenzied hype that can earn The Rich Jerk and Day Job Killer their millions.

Have you ever been trying to learn something, a language, a computer game or a in a new job and found yourself wishing that there was someone you could ask for help?
Sometimes you walk over to the coffee machine and can’t figure out how it works, so you just get a glass of water instead?
Nobody wants to feel stupid, nobody wants to be the one student in the classroon that puts their hand up and says “I don’t get it”.

The one thing I feel most embarassed about is when people think I’m stupid. And to be honest I often feel stupid because I’ve been trying to make a living from the internet for over a year now and I still haven’t received a check.
I’ve read the same blog posts as you have with people talking about their six figure incomes (per month!)

So, enticed by a sales letter I signed up for Wealthy Affiliate. Why was this time different to the the last time I was suckered by a sales letter? Because three months later, I don’t feel like a sucker. I feel like I’ve learnt something.

The heart of WA is its forum. At first it’s less than impressive, it runs phpbb and has the bog standard template and features, but its value is in the quality of its posts.
There are quite a few people new to affiliate marketing and they, understandably, ask beginners’ questions.
Anyone who has frequented regular webmaster forums has probably seen the flaming and the directions to “use the google” that usually follow.

WA actually have pages of posts responding to users’ specific questions and offering advice. The sites founders Kyle and Carson are available to answer questions via PM and the founder of “Bum Marketing” Travis Sago is a bit of a superstar on the site because of his informative and insightful posts. His South’rn Draaawl stands out when you listen to one of his videos also!

I’m learning how to think about making money from the internet as being the same as making money anywhere else. There’s lots of specific advice and tools for learning how to identify a target market. For most people trying affiliate marketing that means finding a product on Commission Junction or Clickbank and then trying to sell it.

The proper way to go about this is to find that potential customer with a need/problem

and fix that problem or satisfy that need.

If you can provide a product that can do this there’s no way that people won’t buy it from you.

I’m learning how to separate the tire-kickers from the buyers. There are plenty of people, like myself, that do the vast majority of their research on the internet before they make a purchase. There is little point in trying to sell something specific to someone when they are merely trying to find more information about what kind of item they will buy.
Identifying someone in the right part of the buying cycle can avoid costly mistakes when you’re driving your traffic using PPC marketing from google or yahoo or MSN.

One of the reasons I am attracted to doing business as an affiliate marketer is because I don’t have to do things like customer service that take up so much of a business owner’s time. So I was surprised to find that it’s mentioned frequently on the site.

Taking a longer term approach than “Making the sale and run” means more profit and having an advantage over your competitors. This advantage can be the difference between a loss and big profits on your advertising spend.

The lessons I’m learning are not narrow or tied to a specific search engine or type of site. (although there are subforums for PPC with google and yahoo) I’m learning how to be a marketer. How to create something that people will value. And by providing value, I can make money. Everybody wins.

This is one of the longer posts that I’ve made on this blog and to be honest, it was one of the easiest to write because I’m excited about the topic. I’m excited about the community in Wealthy Affiliate, I’m excited about how I can apply the knowledge to my existing projects and websites and I’m excited that I could earn enough money from this to earn a living.

“To do what you love means never working a day in your life”

If you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading. If you’re new to affiliate marketing and would like to make an effort to create a real business online from anywhere in the world, I can recommend Wealthy Affiliate. The techniques are suitable if you have money to invest in Pay per Click or if you need to make a start for free, writing articles, promoting them and making sales from the items you recommend.

If you’ve already done research and understand some of the techniques involved you’ve probably put your mouse on all the links in this post and realised they’re affiliate links. You’re right! I will make some money if you sign up to Wealthy Affiliate by visting through those links. If you do be sure and PM me! I use the name scoby on WA forums as well.

I’m going to keep you updated on my progress as I go and I hope to bring you all more good news as I make my journey to become a Wealthy Affiliate.

@Juilius
WA is not perfect but it definitely is not a scam.
One of the problem with products that have an affiliate schemes is that there will always be people that promote them just to make money. There will always be reviews that are dishonest.

But I do think that WA is probably the best product for someone starting in affiliate marketing to buy.
There are a few other good ebooks available but it’s the forum in WA and the number of helpful members that really gives it an edge.

WA has been adding features and upgrading things for as long as I’ve been a member and at the end of Sept this year there will be another improvement/renovation.

If you want to wait until then before checking it out you can try
http://www.longtailtreasure.com
http://www.bummarketingmethod.com

both of those are free courses and are really excellent ( both authors recommend WA as well )

If you put in the time and persevere, you will make money. I think that it may be more difficult for some people than others but

I’ve seen some people who asked really really basic questions see great success because they stuck at it.

Good luck!

other recommended prducts are
http://www.conversationswithtravis.com/
and
http://www.oneweekmarketing.com/
(not aff links )
I’ve bought and read both of these products and their authors are members at WA.

Scoby-
Thanks for the effort and info provided. Can you tell me what kind of dollar amont we should be thinking of when spending on monthly ppc or any other marketing costs? Is there any effective FREE marketing to start out with?

Thanks for promoting integrity!!

@rincon

FOr PPC, take it slowly at first, spend what your commission would be and then check your figures. If you make a sale but end up with an overall loss I’d keep going up to 4/5 times commission and see if you can improve the landing page. If you have buyers try setting up an email signup form so that you can inform / convince them about a product over the course of a few email.

In general I’d try and find really long tail keywords so that it takes you a few days to spend 1 commission’s worth.
Once you’re profitable expand and scale it up as much as you can, making sure to remain profitable.

Free marketing is possible with bummarketing / article marketing.
try the courses I linked above, bum marketing method and longtailtreasure.

If you start with just articles point them to a domain that you buy.
E.g. at the end of the article link to mynichedomain.com

get the domain to redirect to your affiliate link

If you start to get sales with this method you can build your own site (nichedomain.com) and start collecting emails, just disable the redirect and load your
website normally.

If you create some articles that can be grouped together compile them into a pdf or record them as audio and give a user these files when they sign up to your email list.

If you use a forum related to your niche create a sig that gets displayed everytime you post which points to your landing page or your site.

Just a brain dump of ideas, there’s tons of free methods, concentrate on giving the user something worthwhile / intersting and they will be more engaged in what you say later on ( when you want them to buy something )

Thank you for your review of Wealthy Affiliate University. We appreciate you sharing your opinion and doing the research needed to fairly evaluate the internet marketing course and suite of tools. We have seen fit to link to this article in our independent Wealthy Affiliate Reviews section. Anyhow, keep up the good work spreading truth.

Wealthy Affiliate really does contain an absolute ton of internet and affiliate marketing resources, guides and tools to help you make money (in fact, probably more than any other site on the internet) – which is also one of the main reasons that I am absolutely baffled why most of the so-called ‘reviews’ of Wealthy Affiliate out there are just a single overview page that still leaves you in the dark about what Wealthy Affiliate is, how it all works and most importantly – how it can make you money online.

You will find tons of information at this http://www.wealthy-affiliate-full-review.com

Am new to affiliate marketing but very determined to make it work out for me. My main problem is that I dont have a website. Does Wealthy Affiliate University offer domain name registration and web hosting? How does one succeed in affiliate marketing with a shoe string budget?. I look forward to your response at your earliest convinience. Thanks

scoby October 16, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Hi Walter,
Wealthy Affiliate does include hosting for up to 3 domain names but it doesn’t include any domain names.
I recommend namecheap.com, google for namecheap coupons before you buy.

Remember that if you cancel your WA account your hosting will be cancelled as well.

MOst of the members in WA are people starting on a very small budget, using article marketing and other free methods to make some sales. One recommendation I’ve heard from Travis ( of bum marketing method ) is to use free methods to earn your first money and then reinvest your profit in paid methods like PPC.

Good Luck :)

You mentioned a few times earning money through free methods, which are those and how do they work? does that mean it will take much more time to make the 1st buck? I have the money but even now i’m kind of skeptic about signing up, I figured if I can start with no risk at all and make even the 1st payment than sign confidently and move on… how does it really work?
looking forward hearing from you…
Thanx

The free methods I use are basically article marketing ( aka bum marketing )

The idea is to go to sites that allow you to publish an article on their sites and place a link to your own site in that article.

here’s an example on one of the most popular article sites.
random article

At the bottom of that article is a link to the authors site. Some of the people reading the article will click through to his site and hopefully buy something.

You can do the same and hope that someone likes your recommendation of a product and buys it so you get a commission.

There are lots of sites where you can put articles and if you can write a lot of them ( you do need churn them out ) you can make money without any initial outlay.

The risk is tiny ( the cost of the time you spend writing ) but it may take a while for you to get good at writing or placing well in the rankings.
The reward can be articles that make sales for literally years to come.

I agree, wealthy affiliate doesn’t give you everything you need. It’s a great place to start and learn affiliate marketing basics. The things I don’t like are some of the info is out dated.

The best part is the network and support you get in the forum. Plus you get share zone, free web hosting and many tools you would pay for anywhere else.

Don’t forget the wealthy affiliate bonus offer. The investment is small compared to most e-books, but the info is unmatched.

Take care
Ben
