Why is this site called scoby.ie?
Who or what is scoby?
I first heard the term scoby when I was telling a tale of drunken misadventure to a friend of my father’s.
He shook his head, commenting that I was “some scoby”.
He went on to explain that a scoby was a rogue, a chancer, a ne’er do well. I liked both the sound of it and the meaning and adopted it as my ‘handle’ on the net.
Nobody says handle anymore do they?
While in college and without a credit card or disposable income, I watched sadly as the domain names scoby.com, scoby.net and scoby.org were registered by others.
I found out that you could check the whois records to find out who owned the domain and from this I learnt that scoby was also a scottish surname.
As an acronym it stands for a ‘Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast’. Nice.
It is the name of a piece of software that plays poker over the interent. I couldn’t make this stuff up.
It does not bear any relation to a cartoon dog that says things like
“Rhat’s Right Rhaggy, Rhehehehehe” but that doesn’t stop people who can’t spell ending up here.
It rhymes with Toby or Moby.
It does not rhyme with Boobie.
