Mozy automatic online backup

by Declan on January 23, 2008

I found a really cool free service recently that I think a lot of you will appreciate.

It’s called Mozy and it’s an online backup service.

I’ve never gotten into the habit of making backups. I’ve got an external hardrive which I use for storing my movies and music but I keep all of my really important stuff, documents, databases and code on my laptop.

A single point of failure is never a good thing. If something goes wrong with my laptop ( and it can ) I’ve lost years of work that isn’t replaceable.

I came across mozy by chance and after seeing that they had a free version, thought I would give it a go.

It’s a simple download and install. You choose which folders or files you want to backup, choose when the backup will happen and mozy takes care of the rest.

Every morning when I look at my computer there’s message to tell me that my files have been backed up.

Mozy works by encrypting the files you want to backup and then uploading them to the mozy servers. It runs in the taskbar and also adds an option to your right-click menu in windows explorer which allows you to restore files.

I haven’t noticed any effect on the performance of my computer and while I’m sure it will use some of your bandwidth while uploading, I’ve set it so that it all happens overnight.

The free version of mozy allows you to store up to 2 GB of data, while this may not sound like a lot in the era of terabyte hardrives it should be more than enough to store emails, databases and documents that are really essential.

If you’re happy with mozy you can backup an unlimited amount of data for $4.95 per month but check out the free acount. It’s not a trial, you can keep using the free service for as long as you want. It’s also available for mac :)

You can get free backup in one form or another from most providers. They all have a premium service which allows more space or support. I am fairly I.T. savvy so I dont need much support so I opened several free accounts which I use on different computers. Before you do this, make sure the free version is not a trial as in it does not have a time limitation. The following offer a time limited trial of premium service with ongoing free limited space backup. I use them all and will never pay them anything! (:

Mozy does encrypt your files before they get uploaded to the server so no-one ( not even mozy ) can see what you’re backing up.
